หัวข้อ: Global Citizens in the Making, Society in the Flow
As social animals, humans live in groups in which they build on the intelligence of other individuals to form the advanced society we live in today. Since the consequences of the choices we make every day not only affect us, but also the greater society, politics, as defined by David Easton as the “authoritative allocation of value” in order to govern society, will inevitably appear in some way, shape, or form.
The term “flow”, although can be applied to boundless conceptions and disciplines, an undeniably constant “flow” can be simplified to the flow of time. As the flow of time is independent, the linearity of its flow is used to define and organize various “flows” that chronologically emerge as a result of human existence including, but not limited to, the flow of humans, information, money, and technology. In examining “Society in the Flow”, we must take into account the progression of groups of individuals, in other words, society, and their development across the unstoppable flow of time.
With the flow of time comes the flow of people as evident by the age of globalization. The flow of people can be deemed as both the cause and effect of the flow of various other factors such as the flow of media and communication, money, ideas, and urbanization, to name a few.
As people move, so do their cultures, traditions, and ideologies. The flow of humans in the age of globalization has led to the flow of culture and ideas which has influenced the flow of trade. The flow of trade in itself leads back to the flow of people, as the economic flow has created a concentrated economic hub that serves as a pull factor for the migration flow.
With bustling economic activity comes the flow of innovation, which would shape the epochs to come. This can be seen in the past where the flow of innovation and technology has proven to introduce a few flows – the flow of digital technology which stimulated the flow of information where information is no longer limited to the constraints of human geography, making the world as interconnected as ever before.
Individuals, as components of a greater system, can either identify as one person with no actual power to influence the system, or we could realize that society consists of individuals, just like us. Therefore societal change can only occur as a result of individuals that share a common value and choose to act upon their values towards shaping the flow of society in the intended direction. After all, we cannot control the flow of time, but as individuals, it is our social responsibility to control the trajectory of the society we live in, not only for us but for the generations to come.
