UNITED STATES FOREIGN POLICY

คำอธิบายรายวิชา

This course introduces students to the role of the United States in international politics, aiming to teach students some theoretical perspectives in International Relations, and how to analyze critically the major dynamics shaping American foreign policy. The course is divided into three main parts. The first part is about the different traditions or school of thoughts and IR theories concerning American foreign policy as well as the historical context of US foreign policy. We study the concept of American exceptionalism, and the historical context of the rise of the US to be a world power – an empire. Throughout the course, we will come back to these traditions and theories, utilizing them as lenses to understand various issues in American foreign policy, such as the Cold War and the Iraq war. We focus on the construction of crisis and national identity in the Cold War, and then we move on to military expansion and its impact around the world. For the Iraq war, we study the difference between realist and neoconservative ideas. The Second part focuses how American domestic politics and processes influence its foreign policy. We look at how American institutions and processes – focusing on the executive power, congress, intelligence, public opinion, the media, and interest groups – shape the outcome of foreign policy. We then go on in the third part to focus on issues/topics/debates concerning American renewing its diplomacy; its economic relations and structural power; US-China relations; US foreign policy and sustainable development. We end the course on American future role in the world.
